The system automatically receives current warnings issued by the Estonian Weather Service, analyses them and, when necessary, generates a voice message. Alerts are broadcast in three languages — Estonian, Russian and English.
Warnings concerning Ida-Virumaa are transmitted on the regional talkgroup TG 24814. If a hazardous weather event affects a significant part of Estonia, the message is also transmitted on the nationwide talkgroup TG 248112.
The system provides information about strong winds, thunderstorms, heavy precipitation, fog and other weather phenomena for which an official warning has been issued. When higher-level warnings remain in force, the information is repeated periodically so that amateur radio operators who join the network later can also receive it.
The project is part of the resilient and emergency communications infrastructure being developed by Narva Raadioklubi. One of the club’s objectives is to use existing amateur radio networks not only for everyday communication, but also as an additional independent channel for distributing important information in situations where conventional communication networks may be overloaded or unavailable.
Development of the system continues. In the future, weather and emergency alerts are also planned to be distributed through other communication networks developed by the club.
